Portillo is located 102 miles from Santiago. The scenic drive takes you out of the metropolis of Santiago into the Andean foothills, finally climbing a steep (but very safe) mountain highway to the resort. Under normal conditions the drive takes approximately a 2 hours.
Regular shuttle service is available from the Santiago airport to Portillo on Saturdays. Other days of the week may require a private transfer. Transportation is typically in a maxi-bus or coach.
Tip: For a more intimate (and often faster) ride, choose a private car or mini-van. The cost is only marginally higher, but the experience far more pleasurable. To ensure an English speaking driver, there is a $20 fee. Well worth it, as you will find your driver to be a wealth of local knowledge.
Helicopter Transfers
For the ultimate in speed an luxury, a private helicopter will whisk you from the Santiago airport to Portillo. Helicopters allow 1-4 passengers at a rate of $1,300 each way.
Road Closure
Portillo's remote mountain location is both it's charm and Achilles' heel. Though well maintained by the Chilean Ministry of Public Works, snow storms can and do cause the road to close. Portillo Ski Resort is not responsible for the condition of the road. All guests should be aware that the possibility exists for road closures to prevent access to or exit from the resort. There are financial obligations involved. Your vacation purchase is considered by Portillo to be consent to these obligations.
Guests who are unable to drive up to Portillo while the road is closed will be directly responsible for their accommodation and other expenses in Santiago or elsewhere. The nights that are not used at Portillo will be credited to their accounts. Guests will be able to choose whether to transfer the credit to their extra services account (ski lessons, bar bills, etc.) or use the credit toward a future reservation within the same season.
Guests who are unable to descend from Portillo and must spend the night in the resort will be charged the full rate for their first night's accommodation. However, beginning the second night, a 50% discount is applied to the normal rate.
